Major Roy Hamilton, as Matador

Major Roy Hamilton, as Matador
by B.E. Clement Jr., Class of 1967

As a professor of military Science, Major Roy Hamilton was the embodiment of military expertise and human excellence. He projected the perfected blends of self-confidence and reserve, expediency and proficiency, humility and resolve. Major Hamilton’s military science presentations were as meticulously prepared and flawlessly executed as his uniform was finely tailored and decorated. One day a cadet, well know for his big mouth and gregarious behavior mistook the Major’s average stature and mild manners for weakness. The bully interrupted the lecture with a question calculated to be both embarrassing to the Major and disruptive to the class. The bully, a 230 pound football player, had a very bright buddy who seemed to enjoy vicariously his obnoxious and uninhibited performances. As the bully rose from his seat he feigned seriousness as he popped the ridiculous question:

“Uh, Major Hamilton, sir, if uh, someone threw a grenade into your company sir, uh, I was just wondering if you would lie down on top of it to save the life of your men, sir? As he sat down the bully smiled a silly, approval seeking grin at his gifted buddy who in turn feigned dismay over the absurdity of the question.

Major Hamilton responded decisively, “Mr.____, while your question bears no relevance to the subject at hand, I will nevertheless address it. Yes, I would like to think that I am capable of such a selfless act, but the truth is that until the occasion arises, no one ever knows what he will do. Heroism is in most instances spontaneous, not premeditated. Also, the person who will lay down his life for others is usually not one of the “good ole boys.” He is far more likely to be the quiet fellow who feels awkward in social situations and who pitches his tent and eats alone at the edge of the camp. He will go largely unnoticed and totally unappreciated until after the traumatic moment has passed. It has been

my experience that the boisterous and the braggart are seldom willing to make such sacrifices for their fellow man, In conclusion, Mr. ___, it is my opinion that the least likely candidate for such a selfless act of heroism would be someone like yourself.” Bravo, Sir!
